EDUCATION

Public or state schools are free with the exception of a voluntary contribution each year. As in Ireland, most children attend public or state-run schools, with a minority going to private schools. Most public schools are open, meaning they take any child in their catchment area, but some require prospective students to sit entrance exams. These schools are seen as more prestigious and are open to premanent visa holders.  Further information about the curriculum can be found on www.australiancurriculum.edu.au.  Private school fees cost from $20,000 (€14,000) a year and are usually up to 50 per cent higher for non-residents.

See studyassist.gov.au for information on third level fees, subsidies and student loans.
