Canada is well known all over the world for its free healthcare system and each of Canada’s 10 provinces and three territories finances and a runs a state-wide health insurance programme, Medicare which covers most basic medical services including hospital stays and surgeries.

You may find that you don’t qualify for your province’s health system.  In some provinces there is a wait or you may need to be a Canadian citizen to be eligible.  It is therefore advised for new arrivals to take out private health insurance to cover their stay until they have secured access to the state health insurance.
